Teal ribbon campaign: Get Together, Give Back

The Aztec community is coming together to fight sexual violence at San Diego State.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Aztec community is coming together to fight sexual violence at San Diego State.

In celebration of its teal ribbon campaign, students, faculty, and staff met Wednesday morning for the Get Together, Give Back fall social.

The event was meant to educate and empower students and staff, and included a discussion about consent featuring School President Elliot Hirshman, well as male and female speakers from the Greek community.

The school is hoping to shift the culture from "no means no" to "yes means yes," where a woman gives verbal consent in sexual situations. This semester alone, there have been three sexual assaults over a three-week period.

"I think the dialogue is starting to shift a little bit," student Jessica Coleman said.

"Obviously if you're at a party, if you see something that doesn't look right, you teach these guys. Step up and say hey, that's not cool," student Kyle Murphy said.

As part of the event, students and staff were invited to make teal-colored ribbons, which is the ribbon that represents sexual violence prevention.
