VISTA (CBS 8) - A 16-month-old girl was struck and killed by a pickup truck in an unincorporated area near Vista Wednesday night.
The toddler wandered away from her home and walked out onto York Drive around 6:10 p.m. She was struck by a Ford F-150, driven by a 53 year-old woman, according to CHP. Investigators say the woman returned immediately to the scene when she realized a collision had occurred, and told authorities that she was not able to see the toddler.
The toddler, who suffered critical head trauma in the accident, was airlifted to Children's Hospital. She died from her injuries shortly after arriving, according to Officer Jim Bettencourt of the CHP.
The accident remains under investigation, but neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected as factors, according to CHP.
