Military crews work to extinguish fire at Camp Pendleton

A brush fire blackened about five open acres at Camp Pendleton Tuesday amid gusty Santa Ana conditions, authorities reported.

CAMP PENDLETON (CNS) - A brush fire blackened part of a training area at Camp Pendleton Tuesday amid gusty Santa Ana conditions.

The flames began spreading across a training area in the southeastern reaches of the base shortly before 11 a.m., according to Marine Corps officials.

By mid-afternoon, military and civilian crews had the roughly 7 1/2-acre burn area fully contained. There were no reports of structural damage, USMC public-affairs Sgt. Christopher Duncan said.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the blaze.
