SDSU student arrested in sex assault

An investigation is underway into new reports of a sexual assault near San Diego State University.
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8/CNS) - A San Diego State University student was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman during a party near the campus last weekend.

Francisco Paiva Sousa, 20, was taken into custody about 2:15 p.m., Tuesday, university police Capt. Josh Mays said.

The alleged assault at an off-campus building at 5074 College Avenue was reported Sunday. Police say the victim identified Sousa, a sophomore at SDSU, as the alleged assailant.

Sousa has been booked into county jail on suspicion of forcible oral copulation and false imprisonment. He is currently being held on $100,000 bail, and is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday afternoon.

News of the arrest comes the same day dozens of students rallied on campus, demanding action on recent reports of sexual assault near campus.

"They'll talk to women about how they can prevent their own sexual assault, go to class in groups or not walk alone at night instead of telling the rapists,” said William Johnson with SDSU Take Back the Night. “We will find you and we will arrest you and we will put you in jail.”

There have been eight reported cases of sexual assault near SDSU this semester.
