ENCINITAS (CNS) - The Rancho Coastal Humane Society said Thursday that six beagle puppies out of 35 brought in Monday are being adopted today, but they won't be going home quite yet.
Adoption counselors with the Humane Society have been interviewing prospective families drawn in a lottery from among applications, spokesman John Van Zante said.
None of the dogs will be able to go home until they have been spayed or neutered, which will take a few more days, he said.
The beagles were handed over to an East County dog rescue group last week by an unidentified woman who was overwhelmed by their numbers, and they were delivered to the Humane Society on Monday. Another five canines were given to a pug rescue organization.
Van Zante said adult beagles without puppies will be available for adoption in the next day or two. Four more puppies will be ready next week, he said.
The mothers of the youngest puppies will be available for people to select in a few days, but they won't be able to go home until their puppies are weaned -- in about five or six weeks. Still other adult dogs are pregnant, and they won't be available for about two months, he said.
He said the RCHS is accepting donations to help cover the cost of the Beagles' care and medical treatment. Some have ear infections and a few adults need some dental care.
