Funeral for SDPD detective killed in bike crash

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Family and friends paid their final respects Thursday to a local police officer who died from injuries suffered in a bicycle crash.

Funeral services were held for San Diego Police Department Detective Tim Williams, a 30 year veteran of the department. His family gathered inside Maranatha Chapel in Rancho Bernardo, surrounded by his brothers and sisters in blue.

"We will all miss Tim, but we will never forget him. May he rest in peace," chief Shelley Zimmerman said.

The veteran officer had been with the SDPD for nearly 30 years, working in several different units including child abuse, vice and most recently internal affairs.

He was in a bicycle accident near Carmel Ridge Road and Ted Williams Parkway. He was finishing a 30-mile ride when he hit the pavement, and was transported to the hospital. Less than a week later he was taken off life support.

His colleagues say the only thing Williams loved more than his job was his family.

"You set an example for me to look up to. You're my role model, and you always have been," his son Jefferson Williams said.

Williams had four children. Four of them took the podium on Thursday: Jefferson, Olivia and Lauren. Like their dad, they have a good sense of humor.

"I know I shouldn't say this in a house full of officers, but thank you for letting me drive when I was 11," Olivia Williams said.

They say his laugh and million-dollar smile will be missed. As an officer he was known for his hard work ethic and keen interviewing skills. To his kids, he was their hero.

"Even in kindergarten, 'Who is your hero?' My answer is my dad," Jefferson Williams said.
