FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire that forced several hundred people from campgrounds in California's Sierra Nevada is now 40 percent contained.
The fire erupted Saturday in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park and has burned 20 acres of forestland.
Spokesman Michael Theune says it began near the Potwisha Campground, in the foothills southeast of Fresno.
No buildings are threatened and there are no injuries but two campgrounds and two day-use areas were evacuated as a precaution.
Theune says it's a busy holiday weekend during spring break as so the campgrounds probably were full. He says several hundred people may have been evacuated.
By nightfall, winds dropped and the weather cooled, reducing the threat. However, crews will remain overnight to fight the blaze.
There's no word on what started the fire.
