Storm caused damage across the county

Heavy downpours and lightning strikes caused a lot of damage throughout the county during this weekend's storm.

TIERRASANTA (CBS 8) - Heavy downpours and lightning strikes caused a lot of damage throughout the county during this weekend's storm.

Crews arrived in Tierrasanta Monday morning to help clean up the mess that was left after the area was hit hard by the weekend storms. Atlas Tree Service crews say it's a big job that must be done carefully and with precision.

Three large trees on one street came crashing down over the weekend.

"We heard it crack, but it was just like a thunderclap, we didn't think it was a tree," says local resident Ian Mackenzie.

Ian says that when he looked outside, he saw that the rear of his classic Ford Mustang had been smashed by a heavy tree limb and across the way, another large tree had crushed his neighbor’s carport, causing it to collapse on top of a BMW and a Nissan parked underneath.

"I’ve been here since 1971 and I have never seen a storm like that. It was very, very heavy rain, like we have in Europe," says Ian.

In Ramona, people who found their vehicles flooded did they best they could to dry their cars out and called their insurance companies. In Barrio Logan, crews spent much of Monday repairing a sinkhole that developed near the Blue Line tracks. The heavy rain also washed out part of the nearby parking lot.

Just after 7 a.m., a train operator reported the sinkhole under the eastbound main track near 28th Street. Service on that track was halted, so crews could fill the hole, delaying trains for about 10 minutes while they switched into single track operations with trains slowing down to 10 miles an hour while passing by the work crews.
