Surfers ride waves for cancer center fundraiser

Hundreds of surfers hit the beach Sunday near Scripps Pier to help raise funds for cancer research.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Hundreds of surfers hit the beach Sunday near Scripps Pier to help raise funds for cancer research.

The 22nd Annual Luau and Surfing Competition for the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center kicked off early Sunday morning, raising funds to support research and patient care.

Participants say the surf was poor and it was overcast, but that did not keep them from enjoying the water.

"No absolutely not. It doesn't matter, like I said, this is all for charity. It's always good to get out in the water, as we say, it is much better to be out in the water than sitting behind your desk, so you know what, we will take it," Surfer, Jim Hindman said.

The event has raised nearly $6.5 million for the center since it began.
