San Diego could host 2016 Amgen Tour of California bicycle race

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The host cities for the 2016 Amgen Tour of California bicycle race are scheduled to be announced Thursday at Harbor Island, making it likely that San Diego will be one of those selected.

The race, which covers hundreds of scenic and demanding miles in the state, draws around 200 riders, many of whom are preparing for the Olympics or Tour de France. It also receives international media attention.

The race attracted large crowds when it came through San Diego County in the past, but it hasn't been here since 2013. That year, the first leg began in Escondido, climbed Palomar Mountain, and returned to Escondido.

Among those scheduled to attend the announcement are Mayors Kevin Faulconer of San Diego, Serge Dedina of Imperial Beach, Robert Joe of South Pasadena and Andy Morin of Folsom, along with race organizers and sponsors.
