Homicide investigate suspicious death in Grant Hill

The body of a female was found Wednesday night in Grant Hill, and a San Diego Police homicide team was on scene investigating.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8/CNS) - An autopsy was pending Thursday on a partially decomposed female body found behind an apartment complex in the Grant Hill neighborhood.

Neighbors are on edge in Grant Hill as detectives try to find out how the woman died.

Someone called for help shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after spotting the body in a canyon area behind an apartment building on Market Street near 29th Street, San Diego police Lt. Mike Hastings said.

Officers swarmed the area as many concerned residents watched. Authorities say this is a suspicious death.

"This could be anything from an overdose to anything else it's your guess. We're doing this as an abundance of caution," Lt. Mike Hastings said.

Hastings said homicide investigators were called to the scene because officers were unable to ascertain the decedent's cause of death due to the decomposition.

Detectives processed the scene and summoned personnel from the county Medical Examiner's Office. Hastings said an autopsy would be conducted to determine how the victim died.

She has yet to be identified and authorities have not provided an approximate age. A man who saw the body told reporters that the victim may have been in her teens.

Hastings asked anyone with additional information to call police at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
