CAMP PENDLETON (CNS) - Freeway traffic was snarled, and coastal passenger rail service was suspended on routes across Camp Pendleton Friday, because a truck hit a car on Interstate 5 and then toppled onto train tracks.
Southbound traffic on the 5 Freeway was backed up for miles, as two of the four freeway lanes were blocked.
The crash was shortly after 12:30 a.m. and the Sigalert was extended to 2 p.m., as crews worked to right the truck, according to the CHP. The only direct route from Orange to San Diego county was snarled.
The tractor-trailer struck a disabled vehicle and went off the side of the freeway at the Agra Overhead, where the freeway crosses over the tracks about two miles south of the California Highway Patrol truck inspection facility, according to the CHP.
No injuries were reported.
About 25 Amtrak and Metrolink trains were regularly scheduled to run on the tracks before 2 p.m. today, but no Coaster trains were affected, as they do not run north of Oceanside.
Amtrak was advising its passengers to use Metrolink trains in L.A. and Orange counties, and Coaster trains in San Diego County, which were honoring Amtrak tickets. But there was no bus service, according to ticket agents, set up around the truck crash.
