SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Local city leaders and retailers around San Diego participated in Small Business Saturday in hopes of boosting the local economy ahead of the holiday shopping season.
At 9:15 a.m., Councilman Mark Kersey presented a citywide proclamation to Second Chance Beer Company in Carmel Mountain Ranch. Kersey said the brewery represents the thousands of small businesses throughout the city and county participating in the day geared at boosting local economies across the country the day after big-box retailers partake in Black Friday deals.
"Supporting local businesses is key to having a strong and enduring San Diego economy," Kersey said. "This holiday season and year-round, I encourage you to shop and dine at locally owned businesses whenever possible."
At noon, Councilman Todd Gloria got things started at the Simply Local store at 3013 University Ave. in North Park, which features goods and gifts made by local San Diego makers.
"Small businesses are the backbone of San Diego's economy and integral parts of each neighborhood's character," Gloria said. "Buying from local businesses is a way to support local jobs and provide unique gifts for your friends and family members. Take a day off from the hysteria of malls and fighting for parking spaces, and walk or bike to shops in your neighborhood."
The first annual Adams Avenue Spirit Stroll started at 2 p.m. along Adams Avenue and featured independently owned businesses in University Heights, Normal Heights and Kensington.
The sip, stroll and shop event for those 21 and up pairs 12 spirits mixed by bartenders from popular bars and restaurants along Adams Avenue including Blind Lady Ale House, Polite Provisions and Sycamore Den. Tickets can be purchased for $20 at Smitty's Auto at 3441 Adams Avenue starting at 1:30 p.m.
