SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A San Diego State undergraduate student is being held on $3 million bail. She's accused of smoking pot and driving her car into a Porsche, killing the passenger.
Hyun Choi appeared in court Friday, restrained in handcuffs. The prosecutor said she smoked medical marijuana on Easter Sunday and crashed head-on into a 1956 Porsche on Pomerado Road, killing the passenger 43-year-old Amanda Walzer.
The driver, 49-year-old Jon Warshawsky from San Diego, is in the ICU at a local hospital.
The prosecution said the marijuana pipe was still hot to the touch when police arrived to the scene. However, attorneys said she had a medical marijuana card.
"Obviously this was a tragic case for everyone involved. We've got to get the bottom of what happened that day and why it happened. How much did she consume and did it impact her driving," said Stephen Cline, Choi's Attorney.
The prosecution said Choi has a DUI from 2012in which she admitted to driving over 100 miles an hour.
If convicted, she faces 22 years to life in prison. Choi’s next hearing is scheduled for later in the month.
