Flight to San Diego diverted over suspicious device

A United Airlines flight traveling from Newark, New Jersey, to San Diego made an emergency landing in Denver, according to our sister station CBS Denver.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A San Diego-bound United Airlines flight that was diverted to Denver following a report of a suspicious device arrived at Lindbergh Field early Thursday.

United Airlines flight 1243 left Newark at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday and was scheduled to arrive in San Diego at 9:40 p.m. However, a passenger spotted something that looked suspicious, prompting the crew of the Boeing 737 to fly to Denver International Airport, according to FBI officials in Denver.

Denver police were summoned as the passengers were bussed to the concourse, authorities said.

The flight was later deemed safe and whatever device prompted the detour was determined to be harmless. Officials did not immediately report what the "suspicious device'' actually was.

One passenger on board said there was a buzzing sound coming from one of the seats near Row 43 behind her.

"It was like a buzzing alarm system or an oven alarm and the seat had to be ripped apart," Phyllis Jones said.

The flight left Denver at 12:10 a.m. and arrived in San Diego shortly after 1 a.m., according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

According to the FBI, no one is in custody or being questioned at this time.
