Kavanaugh Hearing: What do employers look for in past?

Judge Brett Kavanaugh was grilled Thursday during a Senate hearing over allegations of sexual misconduct made by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) – Judge Brett Kavanaugh was grilled Thursday during a Senate hearing over allegations of sexual misconduct made by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

While in the hot seat, Judge Kavanaugh was asked about allegation alcohol abuse – allegations he repeatedly denied.

San Diego State University business professor Daniel Del Castillo has been closely monitoring the Kavanaugh hearing. Professor Del Castillo has 20 years of experience in human resources.

News 8 asked him if the recent events will affect how much employers look into applicant’s past. “At some point, this may be a catalyst for the American society – our American society that was based on values form our fore fathers.”

Del Castillo said human resources professionals will mostly point to past behavior as an indicator of future success. “If you show a pattern of behavior that is not conducive to trust professionalism and respect, chances are you will be back in that same groove,” he said.

In the age of social media, Del Castillo wonders if we have been more accepting of questionable behavior than in the past. “The question still remains: Are we becoming an unethical permissive society or Facebook society that says, ‘hey whatever you did on Facebook, that is okay.’”

Ultimately, according to Del Castillo, the prestige and importance of the job will ultimately be the deciding factor. “Depending on the level of responsibility, we need to rise to the level of those ethical standards.”

Professor Del Castillo said a normal practice is to hire someone in the midst of an extensive background check under the pre-tense that the individual is still having his or her past investigated.
