South Bay Ballot: Taxing pot, local rent control

Local candidates made their final push for voters as San Diegans prepare to head to the polls on Tuesday.

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) – Local candidates made their final push for voters as San Diegans prepare to head to the polls on Tuesday.

In Chula Vista, taxing recreational marijuana is just one the issues drawing South Bay voters to the polls. “The amount of money we bring in to our city specifically fixing the streets, fixing the parks, helping the homeless – it’s really great thing to vote yes on,” said James Darvas, a Chula Vista voter.

Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas-Salas, who is also up for re-election Tuesday, supports legalizing recreational marijuana. Her opponent, Hector Gastelum, is against marijuana use and Measure Q – which would place a 15 percent tax on cannabis.

In National City, rent control on the state and local level will be decided by voters. National City dropped a lawsuit to keep the initiative from going before the voters. Like Proposition 10, Measure W would put a five percent cap on annual rentals built after 1995.

Also, in National City, the mayoral race is up for grabs since Ron Morrison is termed out. He and four other candidates are running in the city council race.
