City Council To Vote On Asking For Seal Protection From State

The San Diego City Council is scheduled to vote today on whether to ask the state legislature to protect the seal colony habitat at the Children's Pool in La Jolla.

State Senator Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, has said that she will only introduce the legislature if she is asked to do so by Mayor Jerry Sanders and the city council. The deadline for introducing state legislature is February 27.

A state court judge ruled in 2005 that the cove should be returned into an artificial bathing pool. The judge ordered the city to take down the rope that protects the seals and reduce the bacterial levels so the cove can be used as a swimming area again.

That ruling has been repeatedly challenged by the Animal Protection and Rescue League. But the state Supreme Court backed the 2005 ruling to shoo the seals away and return it for human use.
