Victim cross examined in actor's attempted murder trial

VISTA, Calif. (CBS 8) - She gave tearful and graphic testimony of a stabbing attack that she thought would end her life. Kendra Beebe was back on the stand Wednesday to testify against a Hollywood actor accused of trying to kill her.

Under cross examination with her best friend Mary Thielen sitting by her side for moral support, San Marcos stabbing victim Kendra Beebe for a second day described in detail being violently attacked by her ex-boyfriend, Hollywood actor Shelley Malil at her North County home in August 2008.

"After I'd been stabbed three times and my head was covered, I don't know what was smashed on my back, but I know a bunch of glass was smashed on my back," Beebe said.

The 38-year-old mother of two says the 45-year-old Sherman Oaks man, best known for his role in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin", came back at her with a butcher knife from the kitchen before she fought back with a garden trowel.

"I pick (the trowel) up and I am trying to keep him off of me, from stabbing me. I don't know how long this lasted but not very long because before you know it, guess what, he got around me and started stabbing me 20 more times," she said.

Malil's lawyer Matthew Roberts made Beebe read aloud to the court a series of emails that she sent to Malil's sister after the attack, saying that she believed her angry ex-husband exploited the actor's weaknesses, forcing him to snap.

"In my gut I believe my ex-husband found a weak spot in Shelley's insecurity and I think he pushed Shelley to the edge. I don't believe Shelley did this all on his own account. It just doesn't make sense to me," Beebe read.

The defense also claims that Malil mistakenly thought he was fighting off Beebe's male companion David Maldonado, who had been having a glass of wine with her on a patio during that dark summer night.

Beebe also read an email sent to her from Malil, which expressed his frustration with what she called an unhealthy on-again, off-again relationship.

"You'll never know how much I loved you and your kids. You always talk about how you are so unlovable but that's because you are so, so cruel. The things out of your mouth when you are angry are unbelievable. Goodbye Kendra," she read.

We're told that Shelley Malil will be taking the stand in his own defense next Tuesday.
