Neighbors: 10-year-old murder suspect has anger issues

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The 10-year-old boy accused of fatally stabbing a 12-year-old friend in East County was described Tuesday by neighbors as angry and aggressive.

The victim, identified as Ryan Carter, was knifed in the chest about 1:15 p.m. Monday in the driveway of the younger boy's home in the 12500 block of Royal Road in the unincorporated Winter Gardens area, near El Cajon, according to sheriff's officials.

Paramedics took the victim to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, where he died about 2:30 p.m., Lt. Larry Nesbit said. The boy's alleged killer's name was withheld by sheriff's officials. He was booked into juvenile hall, where he was expected to remain while prosecutors review the case and decide whether a trial is warranted.

Nesbit declined to comment on what might have prompted the younger boy to allegedly attack his friend with a kitchen knife.

The victim lived nearby in Knolls Mobile Estates and was a sixth-grader at Foothills Christian Elementary School. The accused boy is enrolled at W.D. Hall Elementary. Crisis counselors were at both campuses this morning to help the boys' classmates deal with the shocking fatality.

The suspect's anger-management challenges were no secret, according to neighbors.

"Even though he threw temper tantrums, we never thought he's do anything like this," neighbor Derek Gorton, 18, told the U-T San Diego.

Gorton's father, Brian Richeson, said the younger boy would usually express his aggression verbally and that his mother was trying hard to handle the problem.

The suspect was taking medication due to his behavioral issues, according to neighbors.

Another area resident, Maria Marmolejo, said the suspect gave her son a black eye last week. Marmolejo said she reported the incident to police, who told her there was little they could do about it.
