Bizarre robbery ends with stabbing, pursuit and crash

Several people are in the hospital after a man broke into a home on El Monte Road.

LAKESIDE (CNS) - A man suspected of stabbing an East County resident during a holdup at the victim's home Thursday led deputies on a brief road chase that ended when he got into a collision and was arrested.

Corey Kennington Johnson, 34, allegedly robbed and assaulted the man at the residence in the 14700 block of El Monte Road in Lakeside shortly before 6:30 a.m., then stole his car, sheriff's Sgt. Scott Enyeart said.

A neighbor who heard the commotion came outside with a shotgun and tried in vain to get the suspect to surrender before firing shots at the tires of the sliver Audi in an attempt to prevent Johnson from getting away, the sergeant said.

Despite the gunfire, the suspect sped out of the neighborhood, crashing the car into a light pole in the process, Enyeart said.

When deputies caught up with the suspect nearby and tried to pull him over, he allegedly kept speeding to the east and turned onto Lake Jennings Park Road. Moments later, the stolen car collided with another vehicle near Interstate 8.

Johnson allegedly continued resisting arrest until a deputy shot him with an electric stun gun. He was then taken into custody.

Medics took the robbery victim to a trauma center for treatment of apparently non-life-threatening stab wounds to his abdomen. The driver of the car involved in the collision with the stolen Audi was evaluated at a hospital for complaints of pain, the sergeant said.

Johnson was expected to face charges of auto theft, home-invasion robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, failure to yield to police and possession of a controlled substance.
