SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A center to help connect area veterans with the benefits and services they've earned opened Tuesday at the Point Loma/Hervey branch library.
The Veterans Resource Center will be staffed by volunteers trained by the California Department of Veterans Affairs on Mondays, Tuesday and Fridays.
Navy veteran John Veskerna told a local news station that simply getting telephone numbers and other contact information for services was important.
"There are a lot of benefits for veterans of the military, and people don't realize that," Veskerna said.
A female veteran told the station she had no idea how many services were available and, once she looked into it, she was able to get a free hearing aid.
Similar centers are also opening this month in Bakersfield and Redding, part of a one-year pilot program.
