Search underway for arsonist in Grantville car fire

Arson teams are investigating a suspicious car fire near an apartment building in Grantville.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Arson teams are investigating an overnight car fire near an apartment building in Grantville.

A Monte Carlo went up in flames around 3:00 a.m. Wednesday. Due to the car's proximity to the apartment units' windows, some residents had to be evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the flames, but say the fire is being treated as suspicious.

"There's some evidence here that leads us to believe that it was incendiary and we are still investigating those things," said Captain Jack Middleton with the San Diego Fire Department. "And you can tell by where the car was actually burned, it seems to be an area that typically doesn't catch fire. It's the passenger compartment."

The owner of the car says he is devastated, but he's hoping to get more information from investigators in time.
