SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Residents are keeping a close watch over their loved ones after a man was run over by a speeding driver.
Sunday, police are still searching for that driver while the 25-year-old victim remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police say the man confronted the driver after getting into an argument with him a week ago for speeding down Hurlbut Street.
With her mom's permission, 10-year-old Jolie Rosette says police wrapped her Serra Mesa neighborhood in crime tape in the
8500 block of Hurlbut Street because a man had been run over by a speeding truck.
“There was yellow tape over there, yellow tape over here,” Rosette said. “There was a police car right there, dead center so we couldn't get through."
San Diego police say a 25-year-old man who lived on the street confronted a speeding driver. He had done it a week ago too -- but this time the suspect ran the man over with his green truck and took off -- he's still on the run.
“Some witnesses who were at the scene here and some other people who came out of the house when they heard the collision - they pulled the victim out the street and pulled him to the sidewalk," San Diego police Lt. Steve Shaw said.
CBS News 8 went back to the neighborhood to talk to witnesses but they don't want to tell us what they know -- too afraid the suspect will come back and target them. But parents like Bobbie Whiteside tell us speeding is more than just a problem.
“That's ridiculous they have a slow green guy in the road on purpose because literally people speed through the street and it's so dangerous," Whiteside said. “It's dangerous, people just drive way too fast, they should have some speed bumps, put some speed bumps out."
Rosette's brother says neighbors, like the man who was run over, call out speeders.
"Even coming through this alleyway here they will let them know. Slow down a bit, those are their children too even more protective," Isaiah Osborne said.
And it could have been that protection -- that confrontation that put a man in the hospital.
“Something maybe people shouldn't do but a lot of people have big hearts and they just want to look out for everyone else. It's sad. Very sad," Whiteside said.
The 25-year-old victim is at Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he is in serious condition. Those who know the victim tell us he is on life support.
Police say the suspect's truck is described as an early to mid 90's green Ford F-150 truck with a camper shell, front end damage and a loud muffler.
Neighbors tell us the truck is a Dodge Ram and the camper shell has the back window missing.
