La Mesa man can't remove massive fallen tree

LA MESA (CBS 8) - While many San Diegans continue to clean up from this week's freak storms, one East County man isn't able to.

That's because an 80- to 100-foot tall eucalyptus tree fell into his backyard, and insurance won't pay to have it removed.

Korey Mulvey wasn't home when the large 50-year-old tree crashed onto his yard, but his daughter was.

"I got a text from her within seconds after it happened, and she was pretty frightened," he said.

Mulvey says the tree has damaged a brand new pool he just installed.

Liberty Mutual insurance is offering Mulvey $500 toward the clean-up, but won't help beyond that.

"The rest of it is… trees are supposed to withstand wind and if they fall on your property, you've got to deal with it," he said.

A man working at a neighbor's house offered to give Mulvey a quote for the work needed to remove the tree. He says it would be a five-man job, and would require chainsaws and even cranes, and would cost at least $10,000.

"We've got to cut it up piece by piece to carry it to the dump," he said.

Mulvey is grateful no one was injured, but is trying to figure out how to deal with the big mess.

"I don't know if there's any loopholes that can cover anything, but I'm trying," he said.
