CVPD thanks community for supporting body cameras

Chula Vista's police chief thanked members of the city council and community Thursday for helping the department get body cameras for its officers.

CHULA VISTA (CBS 8) - Chula Vista's police chief thanked members of the city council and community Thursday for helping the department get body cameras for its officers.

The department started using the cameras in January. They clip to the officer's pocket and record both audio and video.

Officers say the cameras have made their contact with the public easier.

"When the public knows they're being recorded, they act differently, so it is better for us, it reduces complaints. It articulates and captures crime scenes better,” said agent Joel Monreal with the Chula Vista Police Department.

The camera uses Bluetooth technology to transmit the recorded images to the officer's cell phone so they can review all of their interactions at the end of their shift.
