11 hour SWAT standoff in PB ends peacefully

A person held off police and stayed barricaded in a building at the east end of Pacific Beach for about 11 hours, then surrendered Saturday morning.

PACIFIC BEACH (CNS) - A man held off police and stayed barricaded in a building at the east end of Pacific Beach for about 11 hours, then surrendered Saturday morning.

The suspect was later identified as Kevin McGuiness, 53.

A SWAT team fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the end of the barricade, where the person had holed up inside a structure since midnight.

Police were called to the location, in the 2900 block of Garnet Avenue, at 12:29 a.m., SDPD spokesman Frank Cali said. He would not disclose what the original call was about.

Garnet Avenue remained closed to traffic between Interstate 5 and Mission Bay Drive, cutting the major road link between Clairemont Mesa and PB.
