Police chase in University City, suspect in custody

Officers are involved in a road chase in the area of Genesee Avenue in Clairemont, according to San Diego police. The fleeing motorist is driving at or below speed limits.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A driver who refused to yield to patrol officers in La Jolla led police on a pursuit through Pacific Beach, Clairemont and University City Friday night before finally pulling over in a shopping center and getting arrested.

The chase began in the area of Chelsea Street and Sea Ridge Drive about 6:15 p.m., according to San Diego police.

The driver fled to the south, east and north on city streets, traveling at or below speed limits and eventually running over a tire-flattening spike strip officers laid out in the path of his dark-colored compact SUV.

Shortly before 7 p.m., the motorist pulled into Westfield UTC mall, drove into a garage and pulled to a stop, Officer Robert Heims said. He then lay down on the ground and was taken into custody without further incident.

It was not immediately clear why officers tried to pull the man over in the first place.
