Hero in local store attack speaks out

He was hailed as a hero when he rescued a stranger outside a local convenience store.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A local musician is being hailed as the "guitar hero" after fending off a man with a shotgun who attacked a woman in a corner store parking lot in Imperial Beach last week.

Last Friday, Jarrod King says a drunk driver pulled up into the 7-11 parking lot at 1303 on Imperial Beach Boulevard in a Dodge Magnum and started harassing a woman.

"He peeled out in reverse and actually tried to run us over a good two or three times," said King.

San Diego County Sheriff's deputies say that after the suspect hit the woman in the mouth with the butt of a 12-gauge shotgun, King sprang into action and fought the suspect into submission before authorities arrived and arrested him.

"As soon as I saw the gun, my instant thought was I can't let the gun go off. I can't let him shoot that. Right when he started running towards her is when he hit her with the butt of the rifle. That gave me enough time to tackle him and take him to the ground. It happened so quickly," said King.

King says he is very spiritual and that his actions last week were all about love.

"It’s love. It really is. Not wanting anybody to get hurt in a situation like that," said King.

King says that he and the woman he helped have remained in contact since incident. When it comes to the suspect in the attack, King says he hopes that he will learn his lesson and use it to improve his life.
