Local business holds fundraiser for SDPD officers

The community gathered Saturday to wrap its arms around two San Diego police officers who were shot in the line of duty.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The community gathered Saturday to wrap its arms around two San Diego police officers who were shot in the line of duty.

A fundraiser for Officer Jonathan De Guzman and Officer Wade Irwin's families was held at Pool City located at 4250 Bonita Road in Bonita.

The organizers have never met them, but felt compelled to do something to help.

"He's a dad and a husband. He has a wife and a daughter--it terrifying." Sarah Hunter said.

Friends and family of Officer De Guzman were in attendance, as well. They say they're doing as best as can be expected.

Friday's funeral and procession was very emotional. De Guzman's relatives say they just want the community to know how grateful they are for all their support.

Mariver Hernandez and Alana Noble say their cousin would have smiled to see so many people support him yesterday.

Thousands filled an El Cajon church and crowds lined streets and overpasses just to get a glimpse of the procession. Citizens waved American flags and saluted the police motorcade as it made its way across the county.

"It was pretty emotional seeing the amount of support during the procession and just seeing everyone lining the streets was really beautiful," Hernandez said.

T-shirts and raffle items, including a piece of weight lifting equipment that De Guzman put on hold the day he was shot and killed, were auctioned off.

The money raised will be given to both De Guzman's family and his partner Officer Irwin's family, who was wounded in last week's shooting.

The San Diego Police Officers Association is collecting money for DeGuzman's family. Donations can be mailed to the San Diego Police Officers Association, 8388 Vickers St., San Diego, CA 92111, or made online at sdpoa.org/about-widows-orphans-fund/.

SDPOA officials asked contributors to include "Officer Jonathan DeGuzman" in the notes of the online donation or on the memo lines of their checks.

Donors can also text "DeGuzman" to 41444 for a response with a link to the SDPOA charity's page.

Contributions to aid in Irwin's recovery expenses can be made at gofundme.com/irwinfamilyfund.
