SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - Bikes, scooters and any self-powered mode of transport took over the streets of Ocean Beach Sunday.

To encourage everyone to slow down and get to know their community, a three-mile stretch was closed to cars with most of the car-free area on Bacon Street for the CiclOBias Open Street Event.

“We want people to be in businesses. We want people to be healthy and active,” said James Spellman who rides his bike all around Southern California. “I ride every day whether the streets are closed or not.”

Spellman sees CiclOBias as a way to encourage new bikers to consider a two-wheel.

“It gets people out there and maybe it'll wake motorists that we're here and they don't have a choice,” continued Spellman.

The Ocean Beach MainStreet Association worked to get local businesses involved. Some of whom set up special events in the street.

San Diego Bike Coalition hopes it convinces people to make a permanent change by demonstrating how safe the streets can be with planning for separation for people on bikes.

San Diego Bike Coalition hosts car-free streets occasionally, selecting a new neighborhood each time.
