San Diego Airport: Travel Car is the new Airbnb service for rental cars

San Diegans may soon be able to park at the San Diego airport for free and make money at the same time.

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) – San Diegans may soon be able to park at the San Diego airport for free and make money at the same time.

The new service called Travel Car will allow travelers to share their car with an incoming traveler or a local while they are away.

Shant Mouradian is the spokesperson for Travel Car. The company, which is on its way to becoming the Airbnb of car rentals, is holding a two week trial at San Diego International Airport. “You look at companies like Airbnb, where companies share their homes. So, we are just the next generation [of] car sharing.

How does it work?

Travelers can park for free at the airport’s economy lot. Workers will clean the car, insure it and then, rent it out to passengers arriving in San Diego. Those renting the car would then pay the car’s owner a small amount for each mile that is drive.

“We use your car as a rental car. It’s the wave of the future. People are now sharing more and more things. You think of all these app that make life easier for people,” said Mouradian.

A mile cap is placed on car rentals so cars are being run into the ground. “We are going to clean it. Hand it back to you clean. You will make money. You will save some money, but the important thing is you share and you are part of that sharing community,” said Mouradian.

Travel Car is already offering its services at airports in San Francisco and Los Angeles. If the test trial is a success, Travel Car would be up and running in San Diego by the upcoming holiday season.
