About John Howard

John Howard is a sports reporter, multi-skilled journalist and weekend sports anchor for KFMB-TV in San Diego, California.

"I like to make a story come alive for the everyday viewer, not just the sports fan.  As a reporter, I consider it an honor and a responsibility to tell a person's story.  My goal is to tell their story in a way that moves and inspires those who see it.  As an anchor, I hope to inform and entertain."

John Howard, NEWS 8 sports reporter, weekend sports anchor and multi-skilled journalist is passionate about San Diego’s sports community and telling their stories. Joining the NEWS 8 sports desk in 1997, he’s the longest-tenured full-time television sportscaster in the San Diego market.

John has deep roots in southern California as a 6th-generation Californian.  Born and raised in Los Angeles, he is a graduate of San Diego State University.

He cut his broadcasting teeth in Roseburg, Oregon anchoring and reporting general news.  He was quickly promoted to news director, but after two years of general news he knew his calling was sports.  His first sports job was in Rapid City, South Dakota.  He later came back to California landing a job in San Luis Obispo.  Initially hired as the weekend sportscaster, he was promoted to Sports Director at each of those stations.

In his college years, John was mentored by the late Mitch Duncan, a well-respected anchor/reporter at News 8.  John also interned at KNSD and KGTV.  He graduated from SDSU with a degree in Broadcast Journalism.  His college career was highlighted by being named Homecoming King his junior year.

When he's not giving you the lowdown on sports, John enjoys riding his motorcycle, playing golf, wakeboarding and skiing.  As a skier, he raced competitively at San Diego State.

John has three kids.  Joshua, who has a degree in cinematic arts from Azusa Pacific University, Benjamin, who has a film production degree from San Diego State and Emily, who is a kinesiology major and a member of the softball team at Vanguard University in Orange County.
