Dine on the Deck in Del Mar

Grab your tablecloth and local take out and the City of Del Mar will provide the table and an ocean view.

DEL MAR, Calif. — Grab your tablecloth, plate ware, maybe some fresh flowers, your favorite take-out, and the city of Del Mar will provide the table and the spectacular ocean view for Dine on the Deck.

Oceanview restaurants are lovely but can be pricey, so Nicole Schick and family grabbed Del Mar Pizza and headed to the Del Mar Civic Center for Dine on the Deck.

“You know what, it's not easy to do something new during COVID,” said Schick.

The City of Del Mar and the Del Mar Village Association teamed up to create Dine on the Deck, a business assistance initiative like Coronado and Paso Robles and city council approved.

“Bring your own tablecloth, wine glass, your food, and enjoy the spectacular view,” said Councilmember Dwight Worden. “Please get your food locally and come on down to the patio and have fun.”

The idea is to support local restaurants. For the next three Thursdays bring your own tableware, the food, and your own beer and wine, which is allowed, and the city will provide the deck, and a sanitized table for six in the Civic Center courtyard for free. It is encouraged to dine with people from the same household.

“It’s nice to bring to the table whatever you want, enjoy some great beer and some great food and fun to enjoy it with friends,” said Charles Koll, Viewpoint Brewery founder.

A Del Mar native the local owner said he knows how important local support is needed right now.

“Part of being a Del Martian and part of the community is supporting our local restaurants who support us,” said Koll.

That support is helping to break bread again, spread laughter, and sip new life into our dinner experience.

“We are doing something brand new. Yay! And we are having fun and being safe,” said Schick.

Dine on the Deck will continue each Thursday until Oct. 8. You will need to reserve a sitting from 4 p.m.- 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
