San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher tours business set to receive help from $2.5M grant

On Monday, Supervisor Fletcher previewed the distribution of $2.5 million that will be granted to nearly 500 small businesses in the Fourth District.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif — San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher visited with owner Grace Chi of Grandma Tofu Korean BBQ in Kearny Mesa Monday, one of the business that will receive grant money if approved by the Board of Supervisors at its Tuesday meeting.

On Monday, Supervisor Fletcher previewed the distribution of $2.5 million that will be granted to nearly 500 small businesses in the Fourth District. The funds come from the County Relief Program for Small Business and Restaurants that Supervisor Fletcher established in May as part of a larger economic stimulus program.

During his visit, Supervisor Fletcher discussed the importance of funding businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It was really important to me and my office that we go out to every small business regardless of what language you primarily speak, because the diversity of San Diego is what makes us strong. It’s what makes us who we are," Supervisor Fletcher said.

Breakdown of how $2.5 million is being distributed to the 493 businesses:

  • 60% of the $2.5 million is being distributed to businesses in zip codes with federally designated communities where economic challenges and poverty are prevalent.
  • 355 of the 493 that will receive grants had a prior year revenue of less than $500,000.

County officials said businesses impacted by COVID-19 closures were prioritized; of the 493 being funded it’s estimated the following are receiving:

  • Nail salons: 28
  • Hair salons: 58
  • Restaurants: 130
  • Fitness Total: 38 (Gym: 4 ; Yoga: 9 ;Pilates: 3; Fitness: 16; Cycling: 6)

The Board of Supervisors will vote on grants during their meeting on Tuesday.
