Jan. floods prompt IRS to extend tax deadline for all San Diego County residents

The IRS typically does this when an area is declared a disaster by FEMA whether a person was directly impacted or not.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — San Diego County residents have until June 17 to file their taxes. The IRS extended the deadline for disaster relief after the devastating floods in Jan.

This tax deadline extension applies to all San Diego County residents whether or not they were impacted by the flooding. The IRS typically does this in an area that has been declared a disaster by FEMA.

Tax deadline extension for all San Diego County residents

Any individuals or households living in or with a business in San Diego County are eligible to have their tax deadline pushed to June 17.

"We take our cue from FEMA which is normally to provide an extension or postponement of deadlines. In this case, we did so for all San Diego County taxpayers," said Raphael Tulino, an IRS spokesperson.

The IRS says you don't need to contact them to get the extension. If you believe you need a federal tax filing extension beyond June 17, it's best to ask for that electronically by April 15.

If you live in San Diego County and received a late filing penalty from the IRS, you should call the agency to work that out. The IRS will also be open this Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their office at 880 Front Street.

"If you want face-to-face help, not tax preparation but want assistance of sitting down with someone and getting help you can go to the office," he said.

This week is also when property taxes are due. San Diego County is warning property owners to pay their taxes before the April 10 deadline.

The county treasurer-tax collector says your bill will be delinquent after that and you'll owe a ten percent penalty. The first property tax installment was due back on November 1.
