SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Aspiring singers belted out their best tunes Friday in the first day of San Diego auditions for the 11th season of "American Idol."

Many of the hopefuls spent the night outside the ballpark earlier this week in order to register and receive a wristband for the auditions. They came from throughout the state, as well as Arizona and Texas.

Singers who make the initial cut will be asked to perform in the coming days for the show's executive producers at an undisclosed San Diego location.

The last time "American Idol" producers held auditions in San Diego was in 2007, when 12,000 people packed into Qualcomm Stadium. That session produced five of the show's finalists.

Under "American Idol" rules, registrants will need to bring their wristbands and the same identification shown to producers earlier in the week.

They will also need to be prepared to sing two or three songs. More audition information is posted at www.americanidol.com/auditions.
