Black NY politician: Abortion billboard offensive

NEW YORK (AP) — A black New York City Council member says an anti-abortion billboard unveiled to coincide with Black History Month is "highly offensive."

The sign in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood reads: "The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb."

The campaign is by a group called Life Always. A board member, the Rev. Stephen Broden, who's also black, likens abortion to "a genocidal plot."

Brooklyn Councilwoman Letitia James, of the Working Families Party, calls the timing misguided. She tells the Daily News that comparing abortion to genocide "is highly offensive."

The group says its message counters what it calls Planned Parenthood's "targeting of minority neighborhoods."

Planned Parenthood, in turn, calls it an "offensive and condescending effort to stigmatize and shame African-American woman."
