SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Drugs were destroyed in nine different states, but the biggest event was held in Tijuana.

Dramatic images show Mexican soldiers carefully guarding the 70 tons of drugs burned on military grounds.

A Tijuana editor said it was the first time in a very long time they have been able to witness such an important event that fights drug trafficking.

In a special "Burning of the Drugs," ceremony, Mexican Federales including ministers of defense and the Navy, the Attorney General, lit bails of marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine. In all, 70 tons of drugs were burned.

"Now it looks like they are trying to show how strong they are against drug trafficking ," said Vicente Calderon, Tijuana Press Editor.

According to Calderon, a total of 140 tons of drugs were seized in nine states. Half of those were burned in Tijuana.

He said it was the first time a large amount of drugs had been burned since Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto took office in 2012.

Mexico has the largest amount of drugs seized in the world. Many of the drugs are connected to violence by the drug cartels which are smuggled into the U.S.

"This may send an important message to the organized crime figures not just here but along the Mexican country in general. We are really waiting to find out if this is a change, or a marketing strategy for the federal government to give us the idea they are really tackling this problem" said Calderon.

The largest sole marijuana burn in Mexico was 150 tons back in 2010.

Reports showed 10,000 packages were headed to the U.S.
