New York fugitive, serial rapist pleads not guilty to 1992 car theft in San Diego

Convicted rapist Dale Dulac had an old pending case in San Diego. He plead not guilty Monday for a car theft from 1992.

SAN DIEGO — A New York sex offender that led San Diego police on a manhunt appeared in a San Diego court on Monday afternoon.

New York's state parole agency said it worked with U.S. Marshals to locate 57-year-old Dale Dulac, who is a Level #3 sex offender. Dulac went missing until he was spotted in San Marcos about two weeks ago.

Dulac had an old pending case in San Diego. He plead not guilty Monday for a car theft case 1992. Meanwhile, more serious charges against him are pending.

A judge ordered media not to show his face in court.

Multiple agencies teamed up to look for Dulac before his apprehension Friday. The San Diego Police Department peacefully arrested and booked Dulac on Friday afternoon after officers recognized him walking in the 1500 block of Imperial Avenue.

Dulac served time in a New York prison for raping a 28-year-old woman who picked him up hitchhiking June 14, 1992, the Associated Press reported. Dulac reportedly abandoned the woman in the woods, drove off in her car and raped a 27-year-old woman in Niagara Falls within a 90-minute time period.

Dulac was paroled in 2015 after serving over 22 years. He had also previously served time for raping a woman in North Carolina.

The convicted rapist was at the center of a manhunt after prosecutors say he broke his parole and fled New York late last month. Investigators say he may have been hiding out in San Marcos.

There are currently burglary and robbery charges pending against him though prosecutors have not released any details about those cases.

San Diego Deputy District Attorney George Modlin asked for Dulac’s bail to be increased to $100,000 and the judge agreed.

"He will be prosecuted in California for his California charges,” said Modlin. “Once that is done, what New York sees fit to do – if they feel the need to bring him back to New York – that will take place at that time.

The district attorney’s office said an extradition hearing is set for Tuesday and that Dulac is technically being held on no bail because of the New York case.

He's currently being held at the San Diego Central Jail on Front Street. According to court documents, he's facing charges for vehicle theft and receiving stolen property.
