A former volunteer bookkeeper for the Girl Scouts, who stole about $13,000 over an 18-month period from troops in North County, was sentenced today to 30 days in county jail and three years probation.
Janet Daily, 36, pleaded guilty Jan. 8 to a felony embezzlement charge.
Daily tried to give some of the stolen money back after she was caught, but the Girl Scouts were still out $5,958 when the defendant entered her guilty plea, said Deputy District Attorney Kate Flaherty.
Today, Daily came to court with a check for $5,458 and told Vista Judge Robert Kearney that she plans to pay back the remaining $500, the prosecutor said.
The defendant was immediately taken into custody to start serving her jail time.
Daily, who oversaw the bank accounts of 44 Girl Scout troops in Solana Beach and Rancho Santa Fe for a seven-year period, told authorities that she had been taking the money because of financial difficulties but always planned to return it.
Coordinators discovered thousands of dollars missing from their coffers after Daily announced she was leaving the organization and moving out of state.
A moving van and several boxes packed with family belongings was at Daily's home last Nov. 22 when deputies arrived, said Sgt. Mark Varnau.
