Local law enforcement agencies announce new body camera policy

Local law enforcement agencies are now operating under a new, uniform policy regarding the release of footage from officer worn cameras.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Local law enforcement agencies are now operating under a new, uniform policy regarding the release of footage from officer worn cameras.

"We live in a world where video evidence is more prevalent and video can go viral in a minute," said Dumanis.

Members of the San Diego Police Chief's and Sheriff's Associated announced their plan Wednesday for releasing officer involved shooting videos.

"What this will do is, however, is allow the public to see the incident within the context of the entire investigation and this will be the most accurate representation of what actually happened," said Assistant Sheriff Mike Barnett.

However, video evidence won't be released to the public until the District Attorney's office finishes their independent review and it goes through the proper legal channel.

"if you release it right away, it is one piece of evidence out of context. It will be shown over and over again and it could influence witnesses," said Dumanis.

According to the San Diego Police Department's body camera policy, the cameras are to be turned on during an enforcement call. Law enforcement leaders hope this transparency will instill public confidence and strengthen the relationship between police and the public.

CBS News 8's Angie Lee has the details in this video report.
