Fatal crash on 15 freeway prompts multi-lane closure Sunday evening

California Highway Patrol responded to the scene around 9 p.m. after a car hit a turn incorrectly and went into an embankment along the freeway.

SAN DIEGO — First responders were on the scene of a fatal crash along Interstate 15 near Gateway Sunday night. All lanes except one were initially closed until further notice to ensure the safety of the first responders in the area.

California Highway Patrol responded to the scene around 9 p.m. after a car hit a turn incorrectly and went into an embankment along the freeway, officials said. The car hit two trees before coming to a stop at the bottom of the embankment.

 One woman and one child were inside the car, CHP officials said. 

The woman, believed to be in her 50s, was pronounced dead on scene, and the child was transported to the hospital. The child is said to not have life-threatening injuries, according to a CHP official on scene.

The relationship of the passengers is unknown, per CHP. The passengers have not been identified at this time. 

It is unclear is drugs or alcohol were involved.
