ENCINITAS (CBS 8) - If there's one thing that Rodney "Rodrigo" McCoubrey loves, it's talking trash.

The only thing he loves more than talking trash is collecting it. He's inclined towards what we leave behind. See, when it comes to trash, Rodney is pragmatic.

"It's always going to be here, and if we can't recycle it, try to reinvent it," he said.

So in this casa, trash is transformed into art. It's very whimsical. It's very hip and functional, but the fact is, the message is strong.

"That's what we're trying to do. We really want people to understand why I do this work," he said.

Rodney calls his shop the Fun Zone.

"Even though it's like 'Sanford and Son' a bit, you have to have organization," he said.

Rodney has also been an avid surfer for over 40 years.

"Taking a broken surfboard that's been used once already, this is what I've been doing, kind of reinventing them," he said.

Rodney's found his muse in refuse.

"This is where I work, every day. This is the best," he said.

There's a touch of madness in his medium and mirth in his message and joy in his life. Through art, this collector of trash has become a caretaker of the planet.
