North County player wins big, turns lucky $2 scratcher into $1.2 million prize

The California Lottery said Sun Valley Fuel will also receive a bonus check of $6000 for selling the winning Scratcher ticket.

ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A San Diego County Scratchers player is now a millionaire thanks to one very lucky California Lottery Scratcher ticket.

The California Lottery confirmed that Richard Tapia took home the top prize of $1.2 million after purchasing a Decades of Dollars Scratcher at an Escondido gas station, Sun Valley Fuel, on N. Escondido Blvd.

The Scratcher ticket was purchased for $2, the California Lottery said in a statement. It's unknown if Tapia is a San Diego County resident or just a lucky player who purchased the Scratcher at the Escondido gas station.

Decades of Dollars is a popular Scratcher ticket that gives players multiple chances to win a prize. Players have the chance to win prizes that range from a free ticket up to a top prize of $1.2 million.

The California Lottery said Sun Valley Fuel will also receive a bonus check of $6000 for selling Tapia the lucky winning Scratcher ticket.

According to the California Lottery, the odds of winning the $1.2 million prize are 1 in 6,095,933.
