SAN DIEGO — A popular San Diego restaurant that has become a destination for Mexican food, drinks, and music has been suspended by California’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

King and Queen Cantina, located in Little Italy, has been issued a 25-day license suspension and forced to temporarily close due to excessive noise.

In a statement to CBS 8, ABC confirmed this is King and Queen Cantina’s second violation for excessive noise, which is what prompted the nearly one-month suspension.

“The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has issued a 25-day suspension of King and Queen Cantina, located at 1490 Kettner Blvd. in San Diego, after an investigation into excessive noise and loud music complaints brought forth by the local community,” ABC said in a statement. “This is the licensee’s second disciplinary action regarding this issue.”

King and Queen Cantina is located in a residential area of Little Italy comprised of high-rise apartments and condos. But sits just steps away from other popular Little Italy bars and restaurants.

It's unknown where the complaints originated.

According to the ABC, businesses agree to certain conditions regarding late-night noise and music when applying for a liquor license.

ABC said the department works with the prospective business, along with local government and law enforcement, when choosing whether or not to award a business an alcohol license.

The ABC also considers the impact to the local community when awarding a business an alcohol license.

In a post on Instagram, King and Queen Cantina said it will be closed until Dec. 9  for "remodeling" and invited customers to its affiliated restaurant, Mr. Tempo, located in Gaslamp.

CBS 8 has reached out to the owner of King and Queen Cantina for comment but have not received a response.
