Family finds body in freezer, San Diego police open investigation

Out-of-town family members found a body inside a freezer chest and immediately called police. They're working to find out how and why it got there.

SAN DIEGO — A family made a shocking discovery December 22 on the 4900 block of Zion Avenue in Allied Gardens when they uncovered a body inside a freezer chest. 

Officers received a call around 11:45 a.m. on Friday when out-of-town family members discovered a dead body inside a freezer and immediately contacted police. 

San Diego Police said that based on the unusual location of the body, they called in the San Diego Police Homicide Unit to investigate further. 

Currently, the cause of death is unknown and must be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office. Police said that given the state of the body, it was unclear if there were any traumatic injuries. 

Police said that the body is believed to be female, but did not provide any further identifying information like age, race or other physical details. Police said these details will be confirmed once the deceased has been identified.
