What to do if your car was towed during San Diego flash floods

Extreme flooding caused people's cars to drift away and resulted in some vehicles getting impounded.

SAN DIEGO — The extreme flooding caused people's cars to drift away and resulted in some vehicles getting impounded throughout San Diego. Other than the inconvenience of losing a car, getting a car out of a tow yard can be expensive.

San Diego Police say cars were towed Monday and Tuesday but this only happened if the vehicle was causing a public safety concern such as blocking intersections. Cars are not being ticketed and towed due to parking violations in storm-impacted areas.

"In a state of emergency, if there are cars that are blocking an intersection, then the city is going to have to get that car removed. So that could be happening. But we do want to make sure that there's a fair price there," said San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott.

The city is recommending people use their car insurance for towing costs. Any person who has their car towed by the city can have a "post storage hearing." If the tow is declared invalid then the city will pay for all fees related to the car's impound.

Cleanup crews have been out working to clear the streets of debris. With more rain expected, the city says the best thing you can do is move your car off the streets.

"Whatever you can do to remove your car from the right of way will dramatically help our crews help you," said Deputy Chief Operating Officer Kris McFadden.
