San Diego gym aims to include the hearing impaired in workout classes

Imagine heading to your daily yoga or Pilates class, but this time you can’t hear anything. That is what hundreds of people with hearing impairments must deal with daily.

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - Imagine heading to your daily yoga or Pilates class, but this time you can’t hear anything. That is what hundreds of people with hearing impairments must deal with daily.

The gym, Fitness is My Sickness wants to make taking a workout class easier for people who are hard of hearing. The gym hosts Sign and Sweat workshops which include adaptive fitness classes including sign language, standard visual cues, and playing music with more bass.

Attendees also have the opportunity to learn some simple sign language and instruction on how to incorporate the use of gestures, demos, and even facial expressions to encourage inclusiveness.

Owner of Fitness is my Sickness, Monique Allen, along with some workout students stopped by Morning Extra to show off what the workshops look like.

The workshops are free to the public. Get more information here.
