Comic-Con 2016: More security will be in place

San Diego's Comic-Con kicks off Wednesday and local authorities have a plan in place to keep the big crowds safe.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego's Comic-Con kicks off Wednesday and local authorities have a plan in place to keep the big crowds safe.

An estimated 200,000 people are expected to descend on downtown as San Diego hosts its largest convention.

This year, Lieutenant Paul Connelly of San Diego Police said Comic-Con participants will no doubt notice more uniformed police on patrol than ever before.

There will also be a significant number of security measures in place that the public will not notice, according to Lt. Connelly.

Comic-Con presents a unique challenge for security because of the prevalence of elaborate, baggy costumes that could conceal contraband and pretend weapons that could pass for the real ones.

San Diego Police have increased their security presence ever since the terror attack in Paris in January of 2015.
